Garden

Well I have been working on starting a garden this spring for about 4 months now. I was asked my the company that Jonas works for to plan and carry out a Community Garden. I was excited to be able to do this, but also keep in mind I have never had my own garden or anything like it. I also never keep plants in my house because I kill them all. So anyways this has been so fun for me, I have a little green house in my kitchen with my early starter plants in them, and then on the garden plot that I designed I have a little garden house being built for storage of tools and then also a small section closed off with a porch for the kids to play at. My garden is huge! It will be 2 20x20 ft plots. I am growing (to list a few) corn, peas, green beans, cucumber, peppers, onions, garlic, carrots, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, strawberries, raspberries. That is not all of them, but I cannot remember them all off the top of my head. I will post some pictures later of my progress. Keep looking throughout the summer for more pictures!

Sounds amazing! Teach the girls how to pull weeds and you'll be all set!

What an exciting challenge! Is a plot that you tend to feed people in the community or is it land for the community to use?

Wow, that's so great that you get to do that! I'm sure you will do great, somehow they know what to do when you plant them! Is it warm enough to plant things yet?

You should invest in a black mesh garden netting. Here they sell it at Walmart for like $10 a roll that should be big enough to cover your whole garden. You simply cover your garden with the mesh and use rocks or stakes to hold it down. You have to cut a whole in it where the plants or seeds go, so there is some prep work involved. However, once you do all this you have little to no weeding to do in the summer. Because it is mesh, when you water all of the water still gets to your soil.

A little side note... this does not work well for carrots or things like that because of the size of seeds (too small and you need to thin your plants). Anyway, I did this last summer with my garden when I was 7 months pregnant and was so grateful come the last month of pregnancy. Good Luck!

Neato! I'm impressed, Bex! Good job. :)

We are sprouting our first garden this year, too. We have planted Strawberries, Carrots and Spinach. The kids love doing the gardening. Your girls will love it to- I'm sure.

This is for the community, but I will reep bennifits as well. Jess that is a great idea about the mesh, I had also heard that if you use a clear plastic cover and cut the holes that would work too, but I had thought too if I did thathow would the water get to it? I think I will go for the mesh! Thanks.
